It was a relatively low-key affair as Spain’s Primera Division made a number of deals as the European transfer window came to a close.

Mexico forward Giovani Dos Santos joined Racing Santander on loan from English side Tottenham, his third temporary move since arriving from Barcelona in 2008 following stints at second-tier clubs Ipswich and Galatasaray.

The 21-year-old Dos Santos had recently returned to Spurs, making five appearances in all competitions this season.

He was relegation-threatened Santander’s only significant signing under new owner Ahsan Ali Syed, who watched his first game on Monday as his team drew 1-1 against Valencia in Spain’s Primera Division.

Ali Syed had said Serbia striker Nicolas Zigic would be arriving for a third stint with Santander but that deal never went through.

Altidore loan

American forward Jozy Altidore joined defending Turkish champion Bursaspor on loan from Villarreal for the rest of the season.

Altidore has appeared as a substitute in two league matches this season for Villarreal, who loaned Jefferson Montero to Levante on the last day of the January transfer window. Altidore’s only goals this season were two against Poli Ejido in the fourth round of the Copa del Rey.

The Spanish league had said Altidore would be joining struggling Levante on loan but later retracted that announcement.

Leaders Barcelona sold reserve-team striker Rochina on a four-year deal to Premier League club Blackburn in a transfer worth $616,000.

Atletico Madrid signed Sergio Aguero to a two-year contract extension to thwart offers from English clubs for the Argentina striker.

Sevilla presented Chile midfielder Gary Mendel and Croatia international Ivan Rakitic on Monday, while Paraguay defender Paulo da Silva joined Zaragoza from Sunderland for 2½ seasons.

Striker Jonas, who led the Brazilian league in scoring, arrived in Valencia from Gremio.

Submarine signing

Villarreal, nicknamed the “Yellow Submarine,” signed Ghanian midfielder Wakaso Mubarak for the next two seasons.

Real Madrid, who signed Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor last week on loan until the end of the season, sent defender David Mateos to Greek club AEK Athens on loan.

Deportivo brought in three reinforcements on loan until the end of the season: Spanish forward Xisco from Newcastle, winger Francisco “Javito” Peral from Aris Salonica, and Argentine striker Pepe Sand, whose deal includes a buy-out option for the club.

Malaga released striker Nabil Baha after 3½ years at the club and loaned Portugal forward Edinho to Maritimo for the rest of the season.
